Alternative Photo

An Exhibition of Experimental Photography by MCC Students

Curator Statement

Silver-gelatin prints, made in a traditional darkroom, have long been the standard in film photography, and digital has taken over as the primary medium that photographers use today. This show is made up of images that don’t fit into either of these boxes, at least not completely.

Some of these images combine these mainstream methods of making pictures with older, “historic” processes. These images are made by mixing chemicals by hand, and it can take hours to complete one image. Some of the photos in this show combine traditional black and white images with added elements, like physical alterations, 3D objects, or hand-painted effects.

All of these images take some elements of photography that you may be already familiar with, and push the boundaries of the medium, often taking a completely new creative approach.  Whether you call it “alternative”, “experimental”, “alt-process”, “historic process”, or “multi-media”…..these images challenge what you know about photography and hopefully expose the viewer to some of the unorthodox ways images can be made or presented.

All of these images were made by MCC Students in the photography program here on Elkhorn Valley campus; most of these were created in one of the Experimental Photography classes offered here. The tin-types were created during  MCC’s first ever Wet-plate Collodion class offered this previous summer.

This exhibition of student work was curated by Commonwealth Gallery President Marie-Elena Schembri and Vice President Nicole Bednar.
