Artist Statement

In this body of work, I tried to use line, color, and negative space to provide visual interest. My goal with the use of contour line in these pieces is to create a sense of movement. I wanted to explore the creation of shallow depth that the media of printmaking gives these compositions, by the nature of layering. In addition, I also wanted to explore the impact that different colors, and different types of printmaking have. This collection of work was particularly inspired by water, rivers, wood grain and clouds. I wanted to capture these inspirations in a rather nonobjective manner, allowing the piece to just be. While exploring these formal elements, I have only just begun gathering visual information in this media and I have more ideas for artwork than I started with. As I progress forward, I hope to take more inspiration from artists like Helen Frankenthaler, Alice Baber, Karen Kunc, and Jenny Robinson. I also want to experiment in more depth with layering different methods of printmaking to find unique ways of creating visual interest.
