Hannah Maakestad:
Breathing Life

Woodcut, 19x19
Artist Statement
I have always been fascinated by the notion of opposing, yet complementary systems that come together to create a unified whole. With each inhale of breath, we must exhale; and with growth comes decay, which ultimately leads to life again. These never-ending cycles are found in our body, in our world, in our universe.
In this exhibit, I try to explore the theme of growth through the use of abstract imagery of flora, as well as archetypal shapes that can be found at both the micro and macro level, such as spirals, circles, and teardrop shapes.
I have also been heavily influenced by folk art of Northern and Eastern Europe, which has a very decorative quality, similar to the decorative craftsmanship found in baroque antiques. The swirling designs of these types of art have always mesmerized me, and I try to capture a similar sense of undulating movement in my art.
In the future, I hope to further explore the themes of growth and decay. And while I will continue to create prints and paintings, I hope to transition into making installation artwork in both two and three dimensions.
