Electric Carnival

Artist Statement

Electric Carnival is a series of photographs that uses a wide array of colors, different exposure times, and lens movement to create images you wouldn’t normally see while looking at everyday things we may just pass by and not think twice about. This body of photographs spans over the last few years and many locations.

I created this body of work to replicate the way I looked at things at night. As a child, I would squint my eyes at the night skies looking at the stars, and I closed my eyes partway, as if to stretch the light from the stars to create something new. I began to look at different lights in altered settings and would turn my head in deviating directions to create diverse patterns.

I set out looking for the extreme when it comes to bright and flashing lights. I went to several carnivals and light displays in the Midwest searching for the right lights in the right setting to help recreate the visual excitement I saw as a child. I always wondered if other kids did this or was I the only one. I always wanted to capture what I was seeing and share the experience with others. Life is filled with many different colors and we can use them to create something amazing for all.

Artist Bio

Born into a military family, I was fortunate to grow up living in different parts of the world. My exposure to different cultures gave me many different eye-opening experiences that helped shape who I am today. We all see things in different ways. The photographs I take today are not just made by another person with a camera; they are unique to my view of the world and how I want to share that with others.

I recently graduated with a Commercial Photography degree from Metropolitan Community College. I will continue to use what I learned from my instructors and classmates to cultivate my skills and make photographs that inspire viewers to use their imaginations and make connections to their own lives.
